After our recent review of Duncan Gray’s “Crush” Future Bones Remix and our introduction to both Stephen Mulhall and Leo Pearson from Future Bones I thought I’d also share some of Leo’s solo offerings.
So who is Leo Pearson, well he’s also known as Romin a musician and producer from Dublin, Ireland. He started his music making career producing experimental break-beat back in the 90’s on the now cult label Pussyfoot records. He has also worked with and remixed some high profile bands and DJs including movie sound tracker David Holmes. For the last few years he has been producing bands and singer songwriters, everything from Rockabilly to Country to Indie Pop and as you’ve previously read he’s made a return to his electronic roots as one half of Future Bones.
The Romin 4 track EP is a moody but delightfully refreshing blend of guitar laden percussion which nods its head to Leo’s many influences from over the years.
“Wasted” delivers a punchy squelch driven harmony that blends with Leo’s thought provoking yet haunting looped voice that dictates the rhythm and pace of the track.
“Fallen” is my personal favourite blending deep keys that dance around Leo’s brooding vocal with underlying keys that evoked memories of the pitched up Surgeon remix of LFO’s “Nurture” you know, off the Balance 013 SOS comp (my mind does work in mysterious ways).
”Ropeburn” brings clashing percussion and rumbling bass to a subtler mixed track with Leo’s vocals sitting nicely placed lower in the mix, allowing the instrumentation take centre stage in what I consider a close second to “Fallen”.
“Breathe” slows things down as Leo closes out this EP with a darker offering which shows a diversity and maturity in Leo’s song writing talents.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Romin’s Fallen EP. It’s a fine piece of work which showcases as I’ve said previously a diversity and maturity coupled with excellent production skills which is in evidence in bundles here. With a remix package following in the Spring hosting the likes of Club Bizarre , Replete , Did Virgo, RSAG , Disko Selectors and both Leo and Stephen with their Future Bones hats on I am sure big things await for Romin.
